The Incident of the Stolen Flip-flop

It was a beautiful summer’s day
On the weekend
Just right
To take a long, lazy walk through green fields
Casually strolling in the scenic Sussex countryside.

Conner my 14 year old ‘middle’ boy
Forever after the latest adventure
Wanders on ahead
Armed with his newly acquired walking stick
Just in case
His teenage legs won’t take him all the way into the village.
But as usual
The stick soon becomes a samurai sword or a missile launcher.

Thinking about it
It is a minor miracle that Connor has graced us with his presence at all.
It’s usually impossible to get him away from the PS3
And if we do
The last thing he wants is to be seen with his ‘grumpy’ parents
So I should be grateful for small mercies
Even if he’s acting out a scenario from Skyrim ahead

Dani is chasing after him
Annoying him
Getting in his way
Up to the usual mischief an 8 year old makes

When out of the corner of my eye I see an older couple

Then in an instant
Without warning
As fast as a bolt of lightning

A Jack Russell appears
As if by magic
From no where

Connor bends down to say hello to the little fella
And the cheeky scamp
In an instant
As quick as a wink
Steals his Flip-flop
Off his foot
And runs away with his prize.
The next thing my boy is chasing, the scoundrel.
Over the fields.
Round
And round
laughing as he goes

Dani is giggling a way.
What a hoot!
We ended up everyone falling about laughing.
Like a scene from Peppa Pig.
Even the owners of the dog,
Once he finally came back
With his prize!
The little scamp!

Poor Connor was off guard for just a few seconds
That was all it took
For the little dog to act

Every day I make mistakes
I am caught off-guard
My expectations are dashed
There is ample opportunity to catch me off my guard

But I have a secret
My old man is dead
And I am united with Christ
And all the fullness of God now dwells in me.

And no one can take it away or steal it from my sprit.
There are plenty of opportunities to doubt the goodness of God and all he has provided for me through the cross
But by grace I can rest in all he has eternally secured on my behalf.
